Hue is a well-preserved city situated on the banks of Perfume River, rich on royal ancient tombs, beautiful countryside, lively atmosphere, delicious food, illustrious history, all of that very close to other popular destinations in Vietnam, such as Danang or Hoi An.
We really enjoyed the sight of tombs and pagodas reminding us that Hue was once the capital city of the country.
Hue still keeps its charm, and you can feel the former imperial glory hovering above the city.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN HUE
Hue is set in wonderful countryside therefore, even the journey to the city is an experience on its own. But the true highlights lie within and outside the city's limits as well.
Visit the imperial citadel, museums, photograph stunning pagodas, walk bridges across Perfume River, bike around ancient tombs, or get lost in the local market.

IMPERIAL CITADEL IN HUE
The number one attraction we enjoyed the most in Hue was the Imperial Citadel. The complex is simply wonderful, and it is not possible to describe it with words only, you need to see it yourself.
The Citadel was built in the early 1800s, and from the very beginning, it served as the Imperial Seat of Government.
Even though the imperial days are over, the complex did not lose its atmosphere, and you can admire the exceptional architecture with thousands of details and perfectly-manicured gardens on every step.
Hue's Citadel is also called Purple Forbidden City, and it is better to spend there at least a few hours to appreciate the beauty.
BIKE AROUND THE TOMBS OF THE EMPERORS
One of the highlights in Hue is seeing ancient tombs, and it is best combined with exploring the area's wonderful countryside.
It is really worth to go inside, even though the exterior with the army of statues is impressive as well. Other tombs where we stopped by were Minh Mang Tomb, and Gia Long Tomb.
THIEN MU PAGODA
Pagoda of the Celestial Lady also known as Thien Mu Pagoda is a must-see when visiting Hue.
Thien Mu Pagoda has seven storeys (the tower is 21 meters tall) and golden Budha portraits at the base of the building. Therefore this pagoda is also an important religious center of the region.
CRUISE ALONG PERFUME RIVER
We recommend you to get closer to the most important river in Hue, and one of the most important waterways in Vietnam, the Perfume River.
Both locals and international travelers like coming to the bank of the river, especially later in the afternoon as the promenade along Perfume Rivers is as lovely as its name.
If you are looking for a more unique way to explore the river than walking around, you can take a boat tour that will provide you with a more intimate experience.
